2019 Virginia Off Road Series

IN REVIEW & YOU

• What was your overall take on the season?

I thoroughly enjoyed this season. I went into it wanting to get back into racing and enjoy the time with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. I feel like I definitely accomplished that. I had a great time, I met new people, and for the most part I was happy with my results. So ya, fun!

• Where there any standout races for you in particular?

The most memorable race for me was the Shenanduro. The weather was about perfect, slightly hot but not terrible. I happened to be the only singlespeed rider out there so I thought I was getting max points regardless if I did one lap or 20. (It didn't, I'm dumb and can't read haha) So it made for a stressless race on my part, but I still wanted to push it as best I could.

I was feeling great and about 3-4 laps in i just started my lap and was about to pull a right off the river and head up the hill when I see this guy wreck in front of me. He must have slipped on the gravel and tried to catch himself with his foot. As I approached he was laying there on his back holding his leg, and then I saw it, he dislocated his ankle/foot.....fffffouch. Damn thing was straight out the side, like 90 degrees from his leg. So we got the ambulance on the way, and I sat with him for 45+ minutes keeping his leg immobilized and his mind off of the pain, all while baking in the sun in the exposed field. (Would catch up to me later in the form of cramps that make you cry like like baby)

Luckily, another racer came along who happened to be a foot doctor, she was awesome! She stopped and reset his foot in moments and stayed around till the ambulance got there! Rockstar status!

I got back to it and proceeded to cramp uncontrollably for the rest of the race. After about two night laps I had a face full of bugs, I couldn't see (couldn't find my clear glasses), and I was cramping so I called it a race and went home. You would think that was a bad race, but I had a blast riding there and really enjoyed it, cramps and all.

• Tell us a little about yourself. Are you from 'these' parts and where about now do you call home? How long have you been riding Singlespeed? Do you have any particular favorite trails around the state? Any thing else you would like to share with our audience?

Im from Culpeper, I've been riding singlespeeds since about 2005, after getting out of racing Xterras. Haven't looked back!

• 2019... Goals & Aspirations : any big races on the horizon for next year (VORS or otherwise)? Other big trips like Pisgah or WV or .... ?
2019 goals, Triple crown challenge of bikepacking on my singlespeed. Arizona Trail Race 750 miles, Tour Divide 2750 miles, and Colorado Trail Race 500 miles. Hopefully sub 35 days combined. Of course racing a bit between those in some VORS races. Possibly a Rockstar Time trial as well.

• Any other thoughts you may for us or our audience?

Going forward, id love to see every race have a dedicated singlespeed category. I.e. Shennaduro. Especially at the initial signups, I completely understand lumping groups together for prizes and what not, but as far as points go, it should be separate. Other than that its a pretty good setup
